Germany orders second local lockdown as COVID-19 cases rise

German authorities have ordered two new lockdowns for the entire districts of Warendorf and Guetersloh. The move came after a coronavirus outbreak at a slaughterhouse infected more than 1,500 workers.

State premier Armin Laschet announced the “preventative measures” in Gütersloh district, home to about 360,000 people, would continue until 30 June.

It is the first such move since Germany started elevating its lockdown restrictions nationwide in May.

The country has been praised for its response to the crisis, but there are fears infections are rising again
