Hungary FM: Failed EU sanctions caused crisis

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto claimed on Wednesday that the “failed” sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russian fuel exports “caused an energy crisis in Europe.” Ahead of a meeting of EU energy ministers, he slammed the bloc’s proposals to mitigate the crisis as “completely out of touch with reality.”

Szijjarto told reporters Hungary will not accept proposals that would jeopardize the supply of energy to any individual member state. He insisted that EU measures should not reduce the amount of gas or other energy resources in Europe. Hungary imports around 80% of its gas from Russia and has been a vocal opponent of sanctions against Moscow.
