Iran: More than thirty presidential candidates

As of yesterday, Sunday, the total number of registered candidates for the Iranian presidential elections reached 37. Today, Monday, June 3, 2024, is the last day for registration.

Several well-known figures have revealed their candidacy, including former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, moderate former Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani, former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, and former Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri. Further, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the conservative head of Iran’s Shura Council (Parliament), also submitted his candidacy on Monday.

The official spokesperson for the Iranian elections committee confirmed that the registration deadline would not be expanded. The registration process started on May 30 and lasted for five days.

Following the registration deadline, the Council will begin the candidate qualification process from June 4 to 10, with the final list of presidential candidates to be published on June 11.

The election campaigns will run for two weeks, from June 12 to 26. Iran’s ninth presidential election is planned for July 28, 2024.

These elections were initially scheduled for 2025, but the date was brought forward following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 20.
