Italy: Emergency state in 5 regions amid drought

The Italian government declared a state of emergency in five regions amid drought the country has been facing after being hit by high temperatures, the Chigi Palace announced on Monday following the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

In the statement, Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced the government will allocate €36.5 million to the five regions to help them cope with the situation. Emilia-Romagna will receive €10.9 million, Friuli-Venezia Giulia €4.2 million, Lombardy €9 million, Piedmont €7.6 million, and Veneto €4.8 million.

The state of emergency will remain in effect until December 31.
