Libraries: Decline in reading among adults, young people and children

Between 2016 and 2020, the number of readers in libraries in Tunisia dropped by half, from 3.1 million in 2016 to 1.4 million in 2020. The largest drop was registered in libraries for adults and young people going from 1.6 million readers in 2016 to 687.6 thousand readers in 2020.

Despite the increase in the number of book collections in the country’s libraries, official figures from the Directorate of Public Reading under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs indicate that the number of readers in libraries for children documented during the same period a drop of 700 thousand readers.

The same goes for the number of subscriptions in libraries which decreased by 25.7% between 2016 and 2020, going from 171,254 subscribers to 127,239 subscribers.
