McCarthy elected House speaker in 15th vote

Kevin McCarthy will become the next speaker of the United States House of Representatives after 15 rounds of voting. The Republican lawmaker won the ballot shortly after losing the previous one by just one vote.

McCarthy received 216 votes, with six Republican Representatives voting “present,” and all 212 Democrats supporting their candidate, Hakeem Jeffries. The House will now move on to adopting a rules package and swearing in new members, although the exact schedule is currently unclear.
