MSI Unveils Claw: A New Challenger in the Handheld Gaming PC Arena

In a strategic move to tap into the ever-growing market of handheld gaming PCs, MSI has officially announced the “Claw” after teasing enthusiasts on Instagram last week. This portable gaming powerhouse is set to join the likes of the Steam Deck and other competitors in this thriving sector.

Key Features

MSI’s CES 2024 announcements have shed light on the Claw’s key specifications. What sets this device apart is the choice of an Intel Meteor Lake processor, deviating from the prevailing trend where handheld gaming PCs, including the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go, predominantly utilize AMD CPUs. The Claw’s Intel Arc integrated graphics promise an immersive gaming experience.

Design and Display

Sporting a 7-inch Full HD IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the Claw mirrors the dimensions of the Asus ROG Ally. Visually, the Claw exhibits a resemblance to the Ally, with subtle differences such as the blue A, B, X, and Y buttons. This similarity in design underscores the industry’s commitment to a compact and ergonomic form factor for handheld gaming PCs.

Performance and Specifications

Under the hood, the MSI Claw boasts 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, offering swift and responsive multitasking capabilities. Storage configurations extend up to 1TB of SSD, supplemented by a MicroSD card slot for additional storage options. Weighing in at 675 grams, the Claw positions itself as a robust contender, albeit slightly heavier than its competitors.

Battery Life

One of the standout features of the MSI Claw is its impressive battery performance. Equipped with a 53Whr battery, MSI claims the Claw can deliver a noteworthy 2-hour battery life under full workload conditions. This focus on prolonged battery life positions the Claw as an attractive choice for gamers on the go.

Market Dynamics

The handheld gaming PC market has witnessed a surge in activity, with companies like Ayaneo leading the charge before Valve’s game-changing release of the Steam Deck nearly two years ago. MSI’s entry into this space with the Claw further underscores the market’s vibrancy and the increasing demand for portable gaming solutions.

Release and Outlook

Set to hit the market in the first half of 2024, the MSI Claw is poised to make waves in the handheld gaming PC arena. Its unique combination of Intel processing power, vibrant display, and exceptional battery life positions it as a formidable competitor in an increasingly crowded market.

MSI’s Claw is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in the dynamic landscape of gaming technology. As the handheld gaming PC market continues to evolve, the Claw stands out as a compelling option, offering a blend of performance, design, and endurance that caters to the needs of avid gamers seeking a portable and immersive gaming experience.
