New Zealand designated Hamas as a terrorist entity on Thursday, the country’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced.
Until this decision, New Zealand had solely included the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, on its list of terrorist entities since 2010, while avoiding extending this classification to the entire organization, which also includes a political party active within the Palestinian community. By aligning its policy with that of other Western nations such as Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the European Union, which have already designated the two branches of Hamas as “terrorists”, New -Zealand imposes the freezing of all Hamas assets on its territory and bans any transaction with the organization.
Luxon stressed that the designation “is not a reflection on the Palestinian people in Gaza and around the world,” but only on Hamas.
