One person dies by suicide every 40 seconds, WHO urges action

Every 40 second One person dies by tragic suicide around the worldaccording to recent figures from the World Health Organization, which declared countries are obliged to do more to forcibly prevent these preventable deaths.

Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, recognized on 10 September, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in Geneva “every death is a tragedy for family friends and colleagues,” yet many more suicides can be prevented. All nations should “incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programmes in a sustainable way”.
“Globally, 79 per cent of suicides happen in low- and middle-income nations, nevertheless, high-income countries have the biggest rates of suicide. Incidents are three times larger between men than women in wealthier countries, while these rates are more even in poorer nations”. the WHO said.
“Suicide was the second-leading cause of death among young people” the WHO asserted , adding that “Close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year, and for each death, there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Every year, suicide accounts for more deaths than war and homicide combined, and is the second leading cause of death among those aged 15-29, behind road injury”
The UN health agency affirmed that the global suicide rate had decreased between 2010 and 2016, but numbers remained stable due to the world growing population.
