Suspension of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Libya: Ongoing investigation following a controversial meeting

Libya’s national unity government, led by Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, has taken the decision to suspend Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush from office and subject her to an inquiry. The move follows a controversial meeting that came to light recently.

According to a statement issued by the government, Dbeibah instructed that Najla Mangoush be temporarily suspended from her duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, pending the results of an inquiry.

The decision furthermore includes the formation of an investigation committee chaired by the Minister of Justice. This committee will be accountable for administratively investigating Najla Mangoush concerning the actions that were reported in the report presented to the Prime Minister. Nevertheless, the precise details of these actions have not been disclosed, leading to speculation as to their nature.

It should be mentioned that this decision comes shortly after the Israeli Foreign Ministry disclosed that the Israeli Minister of Intelligence, Eli Cohen, had held a meeting with his Libyan counterpart, Najla Mangoush, in Italy last week, under the mediation of the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio.

This suspension and the ongoing investigation emphasise the tensions and issues within Libya’s national unity government, as well as the diplomatic challenges the country encounters in its quest for stability and international cooperation.
