A national navy unit managed to save 9 irregular migrants from drowning on Saturday morning after their boat was flooded with water,9 miles east of the town of Kelibia.
The Defence Ministry said the migrants in question said they set sail overnight from Friday to Saturday from the town of Raouad (Ariana Governorate) towards the Italian coast.
The same source adds that the said migrants are of Tunisian nationality and are between 19 and 30 years old. They were taken back to the military port of Kelibia where they were handed over to the units of the National Guard.
Naval units operating at El Ketf port in Ben Guerdane also intercepted a fishing boat early on Saturday in which they found smuggled food from Libya. One of the sailors on board was arrested and handed over to National Guard units, while a second sailor fled before being subsequently arrested in coordination with national security units.
