Tunisia-Iran arms embargo : Tunisia abstains from voting

The UN Security Council on Friday, August 14, 2020 rejected a US resolution to extend the embargo on arms sales to Iran, which expires next October.

The US project was only approved by the United States and the Dominican Republic, while Russia and China voted against. The eleven remaining members of the Council which Tunisia abstained from when it took nine votes for the resolution to pass.

This rejection aroused the anger of the United States, which denounced an “inexcusable” vote. According to US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo, the United Nations “has failed today to fulfill its fundamental mission” of “maintaining international peace and security”.
