Tunisia-Amnesty International calls on Kaïs Saïed on the death penalty

Amnesty International has condemned the latest statements by President Kaïs Saïed on the death penalty during an intervention at the National Security Council.

The NGO considered this declaration in favor of the death penalty to be a real shock. And this, in a press release made public yesterday, September 29.

Indeed, Emna Kallali, director of the human rights organization in Tunis, said that since 1991, Tunisia has never applied any verdict of capital punishment. For her, the declaration of the President of the Republic is shocking. “It goes against a tradition rooted for decades, namely not to apply the death penalty.” She says. And to consider that Kaïs Saïed is the first Tunisian President to announce his intention to apply the death penalty. “We ask the President of the Republic to renounce the application of the death penalty and we demand an immediate official ban on its application with the aim of abolishing it.” She says.

Moreover, the speaker considers that the culprits must face justice.
“No matter how abominable the crime is, no excuse can justify the death penalty.” She launches. And to believe that no statistics prove that this sanction is capable of reducing the number of crimes.

As a reminder, Amnesty International strongly opposes the death penalty in all cases. For her, the death penalty is a kind of violation of the right to life. Moreover, the right to life is mentioned in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Note also that Tunisia voted in 2012 in favor of a UN decision on the suspension of the use of the death penalty.
