Tunisia-Beja: The sugar factory threatened with bankruptcy

The agents of the Tunisian sugar company (STS), backed by the Regional Labor Union in Béja, organized a demonstration rally this morning in front of the factory’s headquarters to condemn the financial difficulties faced by the company in question. The secretary-general of the UGTT regional office in Béja, Abdelhamid Cherif said that this movement was organized as a sign of objection against the behaviour of the National Petroleum Distribution Company (SNDP) which declines to provide them with fuel oil, essential for the resumption of activity at the sugar factory.

“The SNDP has called on those accountable for the sugar factory to finalize the payment procedures related to the acquisition of this material as soon as possible while the activity of the factory is stopped”, added Cherif. The speaker also threatened to begin a general strike if the supervisory authorities did not react favourably to their demands.
