Tunisia-Bizerte:Olive harvest down this season

The regional commissioner for agricultural development in the governorate of Bizerte said that the olive harvest in the region is declining this season when it will have to reach 8 thousand tons against 30 thousand tons last year.

In a statement to the TAP agency, the official indicated that the drop in production concerns all regions due to the natural phenomenon of alternation in certain fruit trees such as the olive tree and which consists of the variation in the production of year to year.

In anticipation of the start of the olive picking in November, inspection visits were made to the region’s oil mills where 29 oil mills with a storage capacity of 2,500 tonnes were set up to accommodate the harvest. Among these oil mills, 13 equipped with developed technologies and 2 specialized in extracting organic olive oil, according to the same source.
In this context, the official indicated, at the same source, that the areas devoted to the organic cultivation of olives in the region amount to 1,500 ha out of 17,000 ha of olive forests, adding that the production of oil organic is estimated at 300 tonnes for this season.
Regarding the treatment of vegetable water, the same source added that a program for the recovery of this material has been set up in coordination with 10 oil mills following the identification of areas devoted to the discharge of vegetable water.
