Tunisia: Bronchiolitis… Covid… Ministry of Health warns parents

Riadh Daghfous, the Director General of the National Pharmacovigilance Center, head of the scientific vaccination committee, and member of the scientific committee to combat the spread of the coronavirus, has issued a warning concerning a widespread wave of bronchiolitis affecting infants aged less than two years in Tunisia. Many cases have been hospitalized, including in pediatric intensive care units.

Daghfous urged parents to stick to strict preventive measures to safeguard the health of infants. Additionally, he warned against the spread of seasonal viral infections, the new “GN.1” variant of COVID, which the World Health Organization has classified as “interesting.” While the occurrence of this variant in Tunisia has not been confirmed, Daghfous stressed the necessity for vigilance and monitoring.

The new variant, originating from the “Omicron” strain, is associated with an increased risk of transmission due to multiple mutations (30 in total). Daghfous ruled out the likelihood of a significant wave but emphasised the importance of close monitoring. Symptoms of this variant are similar to Omicron, including high body temperature, headache, fatigue, weakness, and cough. Special attention is required for individuals with chronic diseases, immunodeficiency, and the elderly.

Despite ongoing efforts, Daghfous highlighted that COVID-19 is not over, and preventive measures remain crucial, especially during year-end celebrations. He cautioned citizens against winter celebrations, which coincide with the seasonal spread of viruses.

Regarding the new variant, Daghfous explained that the World Health Organization has not outlined specific procedures in border crossing areas at this time.
