The Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, that it has requested the opening of an inquiry into a deal arranged by a Tunisian company for the import of waste from Italy, without revealing the name of the company.
This comes the day after the broadcast on a private television channel of an investigative record, telling that 70 containers of waste from Italy, bringing 120 tons of waste arrived in Tunisia. More than 200 other containers are still expecting in the port of Sousse, according to the same source.
The Tunisian company would earn 48 euros for each tonne of waste imported. These are different types of waste including hospital waste and whose import does not comply with national and international standards, it was further indicated.
The Department of Local Affairs and the Environment stipulated that it did not give any authority to the company included in this affair and that it “did not ‘will not hesitate to take all appropriate legal measures in the face of this kind of overrun “.
It said that a decision was decided “to no longer accept the containers of waste imported by the said company and to return the quantities previously imported”, during a working session, held on July 8, 2020, with the participation of all the departments concerned.
