Tunisia – Closure of Sidi Thabet landfill

The municipality of Sidi Thabet has decided to permanently shut the Sidi Thabet informal landfill and move household waste to the El Mnihla landfill, according to a press release published at the end of last week.

Several residents of Sidi Thabet and civil society activists in the delegation area had called, in a note addressed to the municipality, to close the illegal dump in the area due to “the notable decline of the environmental situation in the region, especially with the continued exploitation of green and agricultural areas and their transformation into random dumpsites for factory waste.

The residents voiced their support for the request for a municipal decision to close the landfill and their rejection to expand its operation in any way.”
