Tunisia-Ennahdha estimates it essential to defer to President Kais Saeid to demand apology from France

Following the refusal by the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) of the draft motion asking France to “apologize to the Tunisian people for the colonial atrocities it committed in Tunisia,” the Ennahdha movement pointed out the necessity to coordinate with the President of the Republic.
“This sort of initiative falls within the prerogatives of the President of the Republic, particularly given the exceptional circumstances that the country is going through considering the difficult financial and social consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic,” explains Ennahdha, adding that these circumstances “necessitate further collaboration with all of Tunisia’s partners without exception.”
The Ennahdha Party had communicated, in a statement issued the previous day, its “concern about this set of critical and sensible initiative without prior coordination and discussion between the institutions of the State and the principal actors of its foreign policy and without obtaining sufficiently broad national consensus on the aspects of the motion among all the components of the political and social field, which makes it a source of conflict and polarisation despite the nobility of its objectives.”
The Al-Karama Coalition’s motion failed to get the 109 votes needed to pass it. 77 deputies voted for, 5 voted against, while 46 abstained.
