Tunisia-Foreign Ministry clarifies applications to regional and international authorities

Applications to regional or international authorities are governed by mechanisms and procedures known to specialists and those familiar with multilateral work, and this issue cannot be addressed without command of the field and special knowledge, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad said Friday.

The department explained in a statement that membership of the African Union Peace and Security Council is divided into two categories, each with a different term of office: Two years for the first and three years for the second.

This clarification follows information reported by some media and social networks claiming the support of a sisterly country to the candidacy of another sisterly country to the AU Peace and Security Council at the expense of Tunisia’s candidacy.

“Tunisia is running for the AU Peace and Security Council for a two-year term, and it is to date, the only North African country running in this category.”

The Tunisian candidacy has nothing to do with that of a sisterly North African country, which is for a three-year term,” the same source added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed astonishment that such malicious and perfidious rumours continue to be spread, calling on the media and all those interested in diplomatic matters to check the veracity of the information and to seek it out at the source in order to avoid any confusion or misinterpretation that could undermine Tunisia and its foreign relations.
