The French Embassy has decided to close all French schools and schools with a French curriculum approved in Tunisia as of this evening and until further notice.
In a statement, a copy of which has reached TAP, French ambassador to Tunisia Olivier Poivre d’Arvor assures that “in order to preserve the school careers of the pupils, these schools and their teams will organize the pedagogical continuity at a distance”.
“France, in solidarity with the measures decided by the Tunisian government, is contributing to the prevention and fight against the Coronavirus/Covid-19 epidemic”.
The ambassador also announces, in his statement, the suspension of all cultural activities in the French Institutes of Tunis, Sousse and Sfax.
However, he informs users that the services of the Embassy and the Consulate General remain open and will ensure, with appropriate measures, the continuity of public service.
The Ambassador calls on French citizens and travellers coming from France to show composure, individual and collective discipline and to comply strictly upon arrival in Tunisia with the 14-day self-isolation instructions issued by the local authorities, for the protection of all, especially the most vulnerable.
“In this context of a global health crisis that we can only face together, France stands more than ever alongside Tunisia. I would like to express my personal solidarity to all those who are suffering the consequences of this epidemic, particularly health workers. Finally, I pay special tribute to the work of the Tunisian authorities and administrations, who are fully mobilised,” the same source states.
During the day, the French ambassador met with Prime Minister Elyès Fakhfakh.
The ambassador’s statement follows today’s announcement by French President Emanuel Macron, in an address to the French, of the closure of schools and universities from next Monday until further notice.
