The regional director of civil protection in Tunisia, Mounir Riyabi, said today Tuesday that 4 young men aged 16 and 17 who had attempted to leave the territory of the Republic clandestinely, inside a container refrigerated on a ship in the Goulette Port, which was heading towards a European country, were discovered dead this Sunday inside this compartment.
He clarified that Civil Protection intervened on-site to provide the required first aid after receiving an emergency call from the border police, remarking that the four young men were alive and in critical condition when they were transported to the hospital. Riyabi explained that they remained in the cold room for at least 8 hours, which resulted in parts of their bodies freezing, confirming the death of two of them yesterday, Monday.
Questioned about the state of health of the two other young men, Al-Riyabi said: “Until yesterday evening, he was stable and we hope that their condition will improve today,” underscoring that “medical teams are monitoring carefully their condition.”
