Tunisia: Judgment expected on March 29 for Abdel Aziz Essid

The 8th Criminal Chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance is preparing to deliver its ruling in the case of attorney Abdel Aziz Essid on March 29. The hearing brought together more than 200 lawyers who came to support Essid and testify to the significance of freedom of defence and the legal profession.

Essid stated after the hearing that he was being prosecuted not for political activism or professional misconduct, but for reporting a falsified document in an important case, a move safeguarded by his professional immunity.

The Ministry of Justice filed a complaint against Essid for “false accusations against a public official” and “defamation on social networks”.
