Tunisia – Mahdia welcomes more than 33 thousand tourists since start of year

Between January 1 and May 20, the Mahdia region welcomed 33,680 tourists, an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the same period in 2023. It also recorded an increase in the number of nights spent by approximately 25.8 percent, and an increase of around 22.6 percent for the length of stay, which amounts, on average, to 4.5 days.

Statistics from the Mahdia Regional Tourism Delegation indicate that the number of nights spent during March and April increased by around 45.6 percent compared to the same period of 2023 and by 10 percent compared to March and April 2019.

On a related note, traditional markets registered an upward trend in terms of share of overnight stays, as they matched the German market at 27 percent, while the UK market share attained 19 percent. , compared to 11 percent for the French market, while Tunisian visitors obtained 19 percent of overnight stays.

Despite the development of the overall indicators of the tourism sector in the Mahdia region, the occupancy rate during the mentioned period is still low and did not surpass 19 percent. This is why the Regional Tourism Commission is operating on the creation of a new tourism model that guarantees the elimination of the phenomenon of “seasonality” and expects the occupancy rate to reach in the last third of June 90 percent to peak at 100 percent over the next July and August. September and October 2024 are expected to see a 20 percent increase in the number of arrivals from the Czech Republic and Poland, notably thanks to the region’s support for the reopening of the Al Fatimi hotel (291 rooms).
