Tunisia: Mehdi Ben Gharbia hospitalized

In a press release addressed to public opinion,  Mehdi Ben Gharbia’s defence committee declared that it learned this afternoon of Monday, May 09, 2022, that its client had been moved from Messadine prison to one hospital in Sousse after his health deteriorated due to hypoglycaemia and trace element deficiency.

“Knowing that this is not the first time that its client has been transferred to the hospital since he began this wild hunger strike on April 21, 2022, and which has lasted for nineteen days”,  read the press release. “Before that, he had been transferred from his jail to the hospital on three occasions, the first on Tuesday, April 26, the second on Thursday, April 20 and the third on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Each time he had been examined, Mehdi Ben Gharbia categorically declined to be introduced to substances or any other form of food by medical means, therefore insisting on the continuation of his strike as a sign of protest against the continuation of his arrest without ruling on his case”, he added.

While affirming its complete solidarity with its principal, the defence committee “has spared no effort to convince him, without succeeding, to end the wild hunger strike for fear for his life”.
