Tunisia-Minister for Women: Violence against women rose sevenfold during the lockdown period

The rate of cases of violence against women in Tunisia has grown sevenfold during the period of general lockdown, Minister of Women, Family, Child and Elderly Asma Shiri, announced on Saturday

During her attendance by videoconference in a conference on “the increase of the phenomenon of violence in Arab societies at the time of the Coronavirus crisis,” Shiri stated that the Ministry of Women’s Affairs had set a toll-free number 1899, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to notify cases of violence against women.

She stated that her ministry had additionally found another toll-free number (1809) for children, who are bound to stay at home during the period of lockdown and to present psychological assistance.

This is besides devoting numerous hours in the media to experts in psychology to give guidance for children as well as mothers, she added.

During the conference, which was attended by diplomats, men of culture and media professionals in the Arab world, Shiri emphasised the part of civil society and associations active in the field of women, family, children and the elderly, which have supported the efforts of the Ministry to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on these groups.
