Tunisia-Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem proclaims the end of the illicit mobile market

Minister of Communication Technologies and the Digital Economy Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem vowed when he assumed office that  Tunisia will pass into high gear thanks to digital.

Once again, this commitment has been kept since the Minister stated yesterday the active launch of a long-awaited project which is the central register system of the Mobile Equipment Identifier.

A scheme started in 2018 and which called on a complex ecosystem of stakeholders made up of Telcos, certification authorities, IT security, mobile device suppliers, etc.

This multi-channel platform cuts the grass under the foot of an illegal market drawing more than 60% of the phones currently in circulation.

In fact, if we attribute to the latest figures from INT, the intrusion percentage of mobile telephony was 124% in September 2020 with 14,615,798 active subscribers during the last 3 months.

Nevertheless, it turns out that during the year 2020 just 3 million imported mobile phones were reported by the main official importers.

The system called SAJALNI is based on a central database for the registration of unique identifiers of mobile devices (IMEI).

A record system will make it feasible to order devices and allow access authorizations to the services of operators or not.

Blocked phones (stolen, not formally recognized,) will therefore be blacklisted and will not be capable to access operator services.

A whirlwind of panic is now storming on websites advertising sales of phones and other tablets acquired outside of formal channels.
