Tunisia-No way to go back on Tunisian women’s achievements, says Parliament Presidency

The presidency of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) said that “there is no way to back on the gains made for question of going back on Tunisian women’s gains”, noting that “it is a question of consolidating these gains in the light of the changes underwent by the country.”

In a statement issued on the celebration of the National Women’s Day, the Presidency of the HPR stated that, “the protection of the achievements of Tunisian women over the past decades and their development is a constitutional commitment”.

It renewed the commitment of the people’s representatives and their readiness to interact positively with all draft laws and international conventions aimed at achieving more gains for Tunisian women and combating all manifestations of discrimination, violence and marginalisation.

The Presidency of the HPR further emphasised the importance of responding to the concerns expressed by social circles regarding the difficult situation of women in the interior regions and working-class neighbourhoods.

It called on the authorities to pay more attention to these situations and to draw up the development plans and programmes needed to overcome all the shortcomings noted.

It expressed the hope that the laws approved by the HPR during the 2019-2020 parliamentary session, including, in particular, the law on solidarity economy, the law on participatory financing and the law on the recruitment of persons unemployed for over 10 year, will help provide more opportunities to ensure the integration of Tunisian women in economic life and the improvement of their living conditions.
