Tunisia-President Kais Saied: “I opted for written consultations…because some verbal consultations are distorted in public

.

President Kais Saied accused certain sides in parliament, which he did not name, of spreading lies and imputing falsehoods to him.

These relate to Hichem Mechichi’s government formation process in terms of the interpretation of the constitution on the issue, he specified.

Kais Saied was speaking at a ceremony held Wednesday at the Carthage Palace where the new members of the government were sworn in.

“There will come a day when I will tell the truth about betrayals, infiltration, treachery and false promises… about compromising links with Zionism and colonialism,” the Head of State warned.

He added: “Yesterday, I watched MPs’ remarks at the plenary session dedicated to the confidence vote in the government: there were those who declared the truth and those who lied, made allegations and spread slander, and they were many.”

He said he will one day reveal the alleged difficulties encountered during the consultations on the formation of the government since November 2019, unless the obligation imposes him to submit to the duty of reserve.

In this regard, Kais Saied affirmed that he respected the Constitution in the process of forming the government and reiterated his commitment to abide by its provisions as he had promised the Tunisians.

He said he was convinced that the day will come when the law will be consistent with the will of the majority despite the fact that some have worked to circumvent it.

On another level, President Saied noted that he is aware of everything that is going on, adding “he who believes he has infiltrated the Palace of Carthage and knows the secrets and details is mistaken because I know everything, more than they know”.

He denounced the rumors spread about a new composition of government proposed by the Presidency of the Republic.

“I will not be lenient with anyone who lies, spreads rumors, betrays his country or breaches trust,” he cautioned.

The Head of State said he had respected the rules of consultation, specifying that direct consultations are not spelled out in the constitution.

“I opted for written consultations (the proposals of political parties regarding nominees for PM have been submitted to the registry office of the Presidency of the Republic). Because some verbal consultations are distorted in public,” he regretted.

In addition, the President of the Republic wished success to the new cabinet members, urging them to “form a united front against the many traitors and pawns of colonialism who have sold their conscience and their homeland.”

He recalled that it was he who had proposed Hichem Mechichi as Prime Minister and it is the parliament that gave him confidence and is responsible for it.

Mechichi is not Secretary of State to the Presidency, he further indicated.

Speaking at the plenary session dedicated to the vote of confidence in Mechichi’s government, several MPs criticised the President of the Republic and his Chief of Staff “for having interpreted the Constitution in favour of the presidency and therefore having control over the government”.
