Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, spokesman for the General Authority for Prisons and Corrections, Ramzi Kouki, noted today, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, that 16 prisoners are taking this year’s baccalaureate exam across all sections, distributed among 10 different prison units. He remarked that some of these prisoners were enlisted last year, hoping for better results this year.

Kouki added that the Ministry of Justice, represented by the General Authority of Prisons and Corrections, is committed to guaranteeing prisoners’ right to continue their education while imprisoned. All required resources and conditions for success have been provided to allow prisoners to take the exam under the best possible circumstances.

He likewise mentioned that, in coordination with the families of the prisoners and other involved stakeholders, psychological and social counselling, as well as comfortable review conditions, were provided to the prisoners sitting for the baccalaureate exam.

He further emphasised that prison establishments also accommodate 40 students pursuing different specializations, who are continuing their university education and taking their exams according to the schedules of their respective colleges and institutes. These students include 30 convicts on vacation, 9 pursuing master’s degrees, and one prisoner enrolled in a doctoral program.
