Tunisia – Rehabilitation of public institutions at center of Saïed-Hachani meeting

President of the Republic, Kais Saied, examined, during his meeting on, Friday, March 29, 2024, at  Carthage Palace, with Prime Minister Ahmed El Hachani, the agenda of the next Council of Ministers.

Among the texts in which the head of the state emphasised the necessity to accelerate the implementation, is the text relating to the creation of the Office for the Development of the South and the Sahara, which the President of State allowed to be created on the occasion of his visit to the locality of Nouil of the Douz Delegation in recent days.

The issue of transportation within and between cities the corruption that has devastated this sector for decades, and the daily suffering it imposes on citizens in all parts of the country were also discussed at length. The bus fleet for Greater Tunis, which had 1,157 buses, now has just 434. As for the metro wagons, only forty of the 189 wagons are still in service, and the TGM line is only working at 27 .8%. The situation is no less gloomy throughout the republic.

The Head of State underlined the need to repair as quickly as possible what can be repaired and to assume full accountability for those who caused this disastrous situation, clarifying that the policy of neglect of public facilities followed for decades must end and all those who sabotaged transport facilities must also be held accountable.

In this same context, the Head of State underscored the need to speed up the process of preserving numerous public institutions and facilities and reviewed the program recently developed to save the Tunisian Sugar Company, created in 1961. The President of the Republic that this company is one of the establishments of which Tunisia is proud and that the purpose was to reach a production capacity of 700 thousand tonnes per year, approximately ten years after its creation. Still, its equipment is worn out and some have become out of service, adding that this institution has experienced a comprehensive rehabilitation, so it has not been qualified or developed. Still, the doors have been opened to lobbyists and corruption networks.

The President of the Republic called for accelerating as quickly as possible the implementation of rescue programs for several other installations, such as the Al Fouladh Company and of cellulose.
