Tunisia – Seawater desalination stations to enter service soon

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, in charge of water, Ridha Gabouj, revealed that the Al-Zarat seawater desalination plant will enter service in the coming days, with an estimated capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day.

The Secretary of State noted that the rate of progress of the works of the Sousse desalination plant had reached about 70 percent and will be finished at the end of the current year, adding that these plants will contribute to the supply of 200 thousand cubic meters per day. This will support the water system in Sfax and the Sahel areas and lower pressure on the north and Greater Tunis waters.

In the same context, the chief of staff of the Minister of Agriculture, Abdel Raouf Al-Ajimi, emphasised that the national strategy to combat climate change is based on the mobilization of surface resources, which will make it possible to ensure the reserves of ‘potable water.

He underscored work on many other areas, including desalination and seawater treatment to support drinking water efforts and treated used water to support water conservation efforts. irrigation.

He specified that there is a comprehensive plan to guarantee citizens’ drinking water needs during the summer, emphasising that the situation remains extremely delicate.

Al-Ajimi pointed out that interventions have been made in recent weeks by pumping millions of cubic meters to support additional grain irrigation to guarantee respectable durum wheat production after the drought.
