A car with foreign license plates driven by a Tunisian citizen residing abroad heading to the port of Genoa was subjected to a careful search along with the traveller’s luggage after declaring that it was not carrying any illegal goods.
But passenger screening officers were able to seize a number of gems and antique coins in the shape of a turtle hidden inside the trunk of the car on Monday evening.
The head office of the customs office said in a statement that a seizure report had been drawn up for this purpose and the suspect had been referred to the Customs Investigation Department for further investigation.
