Tunisia-SMT: The prosecution does not have the competence to order the lifting of sit-ins

The Tunisian Magistrates Union (SMT) announced on Wednesday that it is not for the prosecution to uplift the sit-ins or to go there to “legitimize the breaches that could happen “.

The union stipulates, in a publication on its Facebook page that the prosecution intervenes just from a judicial point of view in cases of common law crimes concerning property and people.

The prosecution does not have the ability to order the lifting of sit-ins, emphasises the union. And to add that the prosecution, in all the courts of the Republic adhered to the strike of the magistrates, and this, for more than two weeks.

During a working session held in the morning, prime minster  Hichem Mechichi ordered immediate action to establish the rule of law and coordinate with the prosecution to reopen the blocked roads and restart the production sites.

Several social movements have exploded in recent weeks in regions including several sectors and which have prompted the suspension of production and distribution of basic products. The demands primarily revolve around employment and the right to development.
