Tunisia-SNJT denounces the defamation of journalists

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists and other associations and NGOs condemned the personal defamation of some reporters through web pages.

Professional journalists like Haithem Mekki, Zied Krichen, Elyes El Gharbi, Mohamed Yousfi, Naziha Rejiba, Mohamed Yassine Jlassi have been attacked and threatened for expressing their views. Media and civil society activists have additionally been insulted for the same reason. The SNJT  supports the demands expressed by the people on July 25 and understands their outrage at the policies adopted over the past 10 years.

It emphasises , nevertheless , that reforms, including in the media sector, cannot be achieved through defamation and blackmail. It called on the President of the Republic and the public prosecutor to intervene as quickly as possible in order to put an ending to these acts.

The SNJT likewise called on all journalists to show objectivity and professionalism, maintaining that complaints will be brought against “electronic gangs” which threaten Tunisian society.
