Tunisia-Strawberry harvest begins in Nabeul

The strawberry harvest has begun in the delegations of the governorate of Nabeul that account for approximately 90% of the overall national production, with 550 hectares farmed and production put at 17 thousand tonnes, according to calculations of the Regional Agricultural Development Commission (CRDA).
Strawberry farmers in Korba, which places first nationally with 60% of production, are encountering a deficiency of irrigation water this season.
Talking to TAP, president of the Local Union of Agriculture and Fisheries Moez Chaouch maintained the irrigation water emergency is the result of debts of hydraulic groups, drought and the rise in the salinity percentage of wells.
The pace of growth of the strawberry harvest has approached 4% in the delegation of Korba, Chaouch stated, adding this year’s production is estimated at 9 thousand tonnes on 260 hectares cultivated.
However, the harvest may be reduced due to the cut-off of irrigation water on 50 ha, according to the official.
The rise in the expense of production is one of the principal obstacles confronted by agriculture, states Moez Chaouch, adding that it has touched 60 thousand dinars/hectares for this season.
