Tunisia – Türkiye: revised free trade agreement

The Minister of Trade and Export Development, Kalthoum Ben Rejeb, signed an agreement with her Turkish counterpart, Omar Bolat, in Istanbul on December 3, 2023. The agreement revises the free trade agreement between Tunisia and Turkey, focusing on three major measures related to the establishment of a list of agricultural and industrial products and the promotion of Turkish investments in Tunisia.

The revision involves industrial products with similar counterparts manufactured in Tunisia, subjecting them to customs duties for five years, with increased rates ranging between 27% and 37.5%. Additionally, there will be revisions to agricultural products, with Turkey granting unilateral concessions to strengthen Tunisian exports, providing annual quotas exempt from customs duties.

The agreement also aims to strengthen Turkish investments in Tunisia, organizing a Tunisian-Turkish investment forum to identify projects and investment opportunities. This revision is seen as positive, addressing concerns about Tunisia’s trade deficit, particularly with Turkey, where imports from the country fell by 23% during the first 10 months of 2023.
