Tunisia – Upcoming launch of a direct airline between Tunis and China

During his participation in the signing ceremony of cooperation agreements with the Chinese side in the field of tourism at the Africa-China Tourism Summit in Hammamet-Sud, the Minister of Tourism revealed Tunisia’s ambition to enhance its presence in Chinese markets and double the number of Chinese tourists. Four deals with China were signed to achieve this goal.

The minister noted that the current number of Chinese tourists stands at 30,000 (in 2019) and could be easily doubled with the commencement of a direct airline route between Tunisia and China. He announced that this direct air link will soon become operational following an agreement between the Tunisian airline and the World Federation of Tourist Cities in 2024.

Among the agreements signed is one focusing on digital marketing and the promotion of Tunisia as a tourist destination in Chinese markets. The minister emphasized the strategic importance of the Chinese market, being the largest tourist market globally, and stressed the need to strengthen Tunisia’s presence there.

Highlighting the purchasing capacity of Chinese tourists and their visits outside the summer season, the minister encouraged industry professionals to prioritize environmental care, enhance services, and acquire proficiency in the Chinese language to better cater to this significant market.
