Speaking to Tunisie Numérique,Beja Mohamed Ilyes Gharbi declared that the health situation in the region is very hard.
He stated that an inspection visit was planned to the regional directorate of health and the hospital in Beja.
Gharbi likewise issued a wake-up call, listing the multiple challenges confronting healthcare professionals such as bed occupancy at maximum capacity and lack of oxygen.
According to him, it was decided to set up a crisis cell to control the spread of the virus.
Gharbi consequently called on prime minister Hichem Mechichi and the President of the Republic Kais Saied to set up a field hospital while indicating that all the logistical means of the region are made available to the authorities.
The mayor said that the regional commission for the fight against disasters will organize a meeting this afternoon to review the epidemiological situation.
According to him, officials of the Ministry of Health including Nissaf Ben Alaya will start a visit to Beja to set in place measures taking into account the specificity of the health situation.
The official also called on citizens to respect the health protocol decreed by the authorities.
“Only go out in case of extreme necessity,” he declared.
