Tunisia-Violence against women rise amid lockdown ,say minster of women

Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs  Asma Shiri affirmed that the number of reports of women who have been subjected to violence on the Ministry’s green number 1899 rose fivefold during the period from March 23 to 27.

In a declaration to Mosaique FM, she explained the general lockdown and curfew to prevent the spread coronavirus has generated problems due to psychological tension in the family that could turn into physical and verbal violence.

The ministry has now opened the green number to receive calls 24/24 after it only functioned during administrative hours, she added.

Moreover, the ministry is providing psychological and legal guidance for them.

A centre will house women victims of violence during the 14-day isolation period to help ward off the risk of  coronavirus infection before they are transferred to accommodation centres.
