The Minister of Commerce and Export Development, Samir Obeid, clarified the reasons behind the recent rise in coffee prices during a joint parliamentary session discussing the 2025 state budget.
He stated that the Tunisian Trade Office sells coffee to roasters at 9 dinars per kilogram for household consumption and 18 dinars per kilogram for industrial use.
The minister explained that the price increases seen in the market primarily affect premium coffee varieties, while the cost of coffee meant for household consumption has remained relatively stable.
He furthermore pointed out that the state subsidizes coffee to keep it affordable for families. As a result, the Trade Office incurs a financial loss of over 4 dinars per kilogram sold to roasters.
In summary, the minister stressed that while high-end coffee prices have increased, the state continues to ensure that standard coffee remains accessible to Tunisian families through subsidies.
