British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Thursday that he is resigning from the position as well as from the leadership of the Conservative Party. “It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and so a new prime minister,” he stated, confirming that he will stay on “until a new leader is in place,” for which there is no clear timeline at the moment.
“The reason I have fought so hard over the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person was not just because I wanted to do so, but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you,” Johnson explained. He praised his government’s work, including handling Brexit and the conflict in Ukraine, and reassured the UK will continue to help Ukraine in its war against Russia.
