Ukraine proposes international security deal

During the peace negotiations with Russia earlier today, Ukraine proposed a new international security guarantee agreement, Ukrainian delegation member David Arakhamia (pictured right) said on Tuesday. He stated the treaty would have to be approved in a referendum and contain a clause “similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter,” which states that an attack on one member state is an attack on all.

“We insist that this be an international agreement, signed by all security guarantors, ratified,” Arakhamia said. “We want it to be an effective international mechanism of concrete security guarantees for Ukraine.” Ukraine also offered 15-year bilateral negotiations on the status of Crimea and Sevastopol, during which time neither Ukraine nor Russia will use military force. Kiev would also not “host foreign military bases on our territory, as well as deploy military contingents on our territory, and we will not enter into military-political alliances,” the negotiators said.
