Leaders of wealthy nations need to do more to help poorer countries deal with the climate disaster the world is heading towards, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a G20 summit on Friday.
In his address, Guterres warned of the “dangerous levels of mistrust” between nations, stressing the importance of overcoming these differences in mitigating the consequences of climate change which will be disproportionately faced by impoverished countries.
“Unfortunately, the message to developing countries is essentially this, the cheque is in the mail. On all our climate goals, we have miles to go. And we must pick up the pace,” Guterres said, calling the way in which the speed of economic recovery from the pandemic further amplifies inequalities “immoral.”
