UN: Tunisia denies being xenophobic State

The Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed, Thursday in a press release, astonishment at the statement issued by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) regarding the illegal situation of Sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia.

The ministry denied the timing of the publication of the UN statement which coincides with a series of heavy international pressures on the current regime in Tunisia.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterated that none of the official parties in Tunisia had promoted the spread of racial or xenophobic hate speech against black African migrants. On the other hand, Tunisia addresses the issue of irregular migrants under the provisions of international agreements and laws while complying with the Tunisian law on the matter, the same source says.

The ministry recalls that Tunisia was a pioneer country in enacting legislation criminalizing racism in all its forms against foreigners regardless of their status in Tunisia.

The ministry also reminds that many initiatives have been taken to sort out the situation of sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia, since the so-called “hate speech of the Tunisian State.”

The Foreign Affairs Ministry calls on the various UN bodies to remain objective in drafting reports about Tunisia.
