World population to top 8 billion by January 1st

The world’s population grew by 75 million people during 2023, and it is predicted to reach more than 8 billion people on New Year’s Day, according to statistics released yesterday Thursday by the United States Census Bureau.

The global population growth rate last year was just under 1 percent, and the rate in the United States was 0.53 percent, about half the global figure.

The United States added 1.7 million inhabitants and its New Year’s Day population will attain 335.8 million, according to the Associated Press.

As for India, it recently became the most populous country in the world, overtaking China whose population is estimated at more than 1.4 billion inhabitants.

It took about 12 years for the world population to rise from 7 to 8 billion, but the next billion is expected to take about 14.5 years (2037), reflecting a slowdown in global growth.

By 2050, the global increase in the population aged under 65 will occur entirely in low-income and lower-middle-income countries, since population growth in high- and upper-middle-income countries will only occur among those aged 65 or over.
