World’s First Malaria Vaccine Approved By WHO

The World Health Organization has given the green light for the rollout of the world’s first vaccine against malaria. The WHO’s director-general calls it a historic moment.

The vaccine, a product of 30 years of research, was developed by British drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline in collaboration with Seattle-based health nonprofit PATH and a network of African research centres, with partial funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the WHO said.

The WHO said it was recommending children in sub-Saharan Africa and in other regions with moderate to high malaria transmission get four doses up to the age of two.

Every two minutes, a child dies of malaria, the agency said.
