Mali president resigns after detention by military

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita stepped down and dissolved parliament hours after mutinying soldiers arrested him at gunpoint, diving a country already suffering a jihadist insurgency and mass demonstrations deeper into crisis.
Looking exhausted and wearing a surgical mask, Keita abdicated in a brief address broadcast on state television after troops seized him along with Prime Minister Boubou Cisse and other top officials.
On their part, the Soldiers who staged the military coup said on Wednesday they plan to form a civilian transitional government that will organise fresh elections.
