Tunisia estimates that the celebration, on October 24, 2020, of the United Nations Day, which corresponds this year with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), is an occasion to assess the UN system and explore methods to improve it to ensure greater efficiency and flexibility to its various institutions.
It will be imperative to secure constant backing to the reformist approach to improving the working methods of the UN, particularly in the areas of administration, security, peace and development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad said in a statement issued on Friday.
It repeated Tunisia’s readiness to participate actively and constructively to efforts directed at strengthening the foundations of international peace and security, as part of its duties as an elected member of the Security Council for the period 2020/2021.
Tunisia’s membership is a chance to support consensus, dialogue and mediation following the principles of Tunisia’s foreign policy.
As regards to just international issues and the establishment of international peace and security, Tunisia emphasised the necessity to reach a just and lasting resolution for the Palestinian cause within the framework of international legitimacy.
It added that Tunisia is operating to “support the processes of political resolution of the international problems that have been suspended, especially in the case of Libya”.
In this context, Tunisia declared its content at the level of coordination with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) which made it to choose Tunisia to host the subsequent round of the inter-Libyan dialogue on November 9, 2020, under the auspices of the United Nations.
The same source accented the complexity of the global situation, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, asking for additional bolstering international cooperation and human solidarity.
It reminded in this vein that Tunisia has called, since the start of the spread of the virus, for the adoption of a new international approach to fight against the repercussions of COVID-19.
The statement also recalled the adoption by the UN Security Council, on July 1, 2020, of the Tunisian-French project relating to the fight against this pandemic.
