Bolsonaro supporters storm Brazil’s Congress, Presidential Palace

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday breached security barriers set up by the Armed Forces and gained access to key buildings for the three branches of government, including the congressional building, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Presidential Palace, according to images shown in Brazilian media.

The area around the parliament building in Brasilia had been cordoned off by authorities, but Bolsonaro supporters broke through the police line, marched up ramps and gathered on the roof of the building. Video footage showed members of the crowd roaming inside.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to punish supporters of the country’s ex-leader, Jair Bolsonaro, after they stormed Congress.

Mr da Silva  said there was “no precedent in the history of our country” for the scenes seen in Brasilia and called the violence the “acts of vandals and fascists”.

“You will see in the images that they [police officers] are guiding people on the walk to Praca dos Tres Powers,” he said. “We are going to find out who are the financiers of these vandals who went to Brasilia and they will all pay with the force of law.”
